It started with WHY....
Once you hit your mid 30’s, or at least definitely into your 40’s/50’s, you will face a truth. For life to be fulfilling, it also needs to be meaningful.
Dammit, you mean coasting doesn’t cut it?!
I ask you this.
When you hear the words ‘you need to work on yourself’, how does that make you feel? Like you need to run for the hills? Push that sh*t down and keep moving forward?
If you’re nodding along, you’re not alone. Hence the world’s full of people feeling lost and stuck. Going through the motions. Doing ‘fine thanks’.
I was one of those people too. I had all these ideas of what I wanted in my life. Instead of acting on them, I was clinging to the safety of the known. I was waiting. You know, waiting for the right time.
Spoiler alert - there’s no right time.
Thankfully, 2 years ago, a gift came into my life. It was the gift of this question:
What’s your WHY?
This is the story of what I’ve learned since.
The best way to rise to a career or business challenge with success, is to have a clear, strong WHY.
Why do you care? Why are you working so hard? Why should clients (or customers) listen to you? Why do you let your job distract you when you’re with your family? Why does it even matter?
So what’s a why?
Your why is an answer to this question, so motivating to you, it trumps your discomfort. It’s your key to growth. If you know why you’re doing something and that reason is super compelling. Then, you’re set up for success.
When I was asked this question, I took to crafting my WHY with a vengeance.
I read ‘Simon Sinek’s’ book - Finding Your Why (I like to think of Simon as the father of WHY!). I spent hours reflecting, considering the big picture. Asking myself questions. I wrote a tonne of notes. I let the truth come into focus. It wasn’t easy but it was worth it.
Back then, I was the MD of an advertising agency in Sydney. I had also started selling Essential Oils on the side. It was the latter that led me to figuring out my WHY. I mean why would I juggle a huge corporate job and an essential oils business, in Network Marketing no less?
Working on my WHY, I realised, it wasn’t about the essential oils themselves. It was bigger than that.
My WHY is the lens that guides me in how I show up in the world. Kind of a like a guiding light, built on understanding me better.
Here’s my original WHY, penned in December 2017:
I want to make a positive impact on the world, through using my experiences to help others have better lives. To be an authentic, vulnerable leader. To inspire and empower others (especially women) to lead with their head AND heart. To value and champion, health, happiness and harmony - every single day.
And this:
To deliver on my WHY, I need a “full cup”. An abundance of energy, time and resources (yes money matters) so that I can give generously.
I gained clarity on how I wanted to to show up, both in my advertising career and side hustle. It led to me blending them at times too.
After the 2016/2017 holiday break & finding my why, I created a back to work week long event called ‘Nourish yo’self’ at the office.
Every day I ran an hour long session for all that felt called to attend. Monday was Mandala drawing (while listening to a Tony Robbins leadership podcast). Tuesday I taught yoga. Wednesday, was an Introduction to Essential Oils. Thursday, we worked on our intentions for 2018 (including vision boards for some). Finally on Friday I led a Manifestation themed meditation. Every day there was a mix of attendees, some came all week, others for one or two sessions. By the end, there were over 60 people who attended at least once. My heart was so damn full. #clue
Fast forward to now, October 2019.
Looking back, I know the work I did on my WHY changed everything.
You know what’s even more amazing? Having a clear WHY, brought me into alignment. It gifted me with purpose and as I leant into it, courage too. The more aligned my actions became the greater the expansion I felt.
That thread of WHY pulled me forward. It was the very thing, that started me on the path to stepping out of my comfort zone and into your lives as a coach.
If you haven’t figured out your WHY yet (or at least your why for right now), let this post be the kick up the proverbial b*tt. It’s time to do the work!
Only you have your unique talents, stories and perspectives.
I beg of you, don’t let them go to waste.
Dream big, dig deep and I will see you on the dance floor.
